KEVIN FENWICK REAPPOINTED AS OMBUDSMAN
Motion Passed Yesterday in the Legislative Assembly

Yesterday, Saskatchewan's Legislative Assembly passed a motion to reappoint Kevin Fenwick as the province's Ombudsman.

The decision means that Fenwick will continue as Ombudsman for a second five-year term, ending in the fall of 2014.

Fenwick says he has enjoyed his first term and is looking forward to the second. "I have appreciated the opportunity to work with the public and the government that serves them. Our office is here to ensure that those services are provided fairly, and to alert government when they are not. I believe in taking a proactive role in this process, so we focus, not only on fixing what is past, but on making things better for the next person."

Some of these proactive steps include:

  • release of systemic reviews (e.g. Hearing Back - Piecing Together Timeliness in Saskatchewan's Administrative Tribunals and My Brother's Keeper - A Review of Electronic Control Devices in Saskatchewan Correctional Centres Housing Male Inmates).
  • introduction of "The Fine Art of Fairness" - a training program for government employees.
  • requesting that government establish more "fair practice offices" within ministries and Crown Corporations.
  • offering to review proposed government programs to weed out unfairness before it impacts the public.

Fenwick credits his staff with much of the progress: "Together, we have made significant progress and I thank our whole team for their passion and dedication."
